Did Demand Creation Really Work? Google Adds Two New Ways to Answer
Attributed Branded Searches and automated uplift experiments connect YouTube and Demand Gen exposure with later behavior.
Use Attributed Branded Searches as a fast indicator and uplift experiments for causal evidence. Keep Google’s cited 10% ROAS and 12% sales-effectiveness averages in their commissioned historical-study context.
Attributed Branded Searches counts branded searches made by people who previously saw a YouTube ad. Google positions it as an always-on lead indicator connecting brand exposure with later search interest, complementing slower incrementality studies. Planned improvements include AI Mode support and availability in Display & Video 360.
This gives brand teams something more immediate than waiting months for a final sales study. But an exposed person searching the brand does not prove the ad caused the search. Perhaps they saw a store, heard a friend, or finally remembered the name after three weeks. Useful signal and causal proof are cousins, not twins.
Demand Gen Uplift Experiments provide automated A/B infrastructure to test adding Demand Gen alongside Performance Max, App, Video, or Display campaigns. Advertisers can examine conversions, sales, CPA, or ROAS while holding a comparable group back from the added campaign type.
Predefine the hypothesis, eligible audience, exclusion, sample size, duration, conversion rules, and decision threshold. Avoid major simultaneous changes in price, creative, tracking, or distribution. Check contamination between groups and report uncertainty, not only the friendliest number in the results table.
