OpenAI Removes ChatGPT's Text Limit and Makes Reasoning a Choice

GPT-5.6 Luna expands free access while Sol adds adjustable thinking, shifting attention from availability to task-level model economics.

Unlimited access increases experimentation, but every task does not deserve maximum reasoning. Organizations should match model and thinking effort to risk, complexity, latency, and cost, then verify quality with their own work rather than vendor averages alone.

OpenAI announced unlimited text conversations for Free and Go users, powered by GPT-5.6 Luna as the new default. Files, images, voice, and image generation retain separate limits. Plus and Pro users receive an updated GPT-5.6 Sol and a slider that adjusts reasoning effort, making the tradeoff between a quick answer and deeper work visible inside the product.

OpenAI reports internal factual-error reductions of 62% for Luna and 68% for Sol compared with GPT-5.5 Instant. Those figures describe its evaluations, not every business workflow. Operators still need local tests for research, writing, data analysis, and multilingual work. Giving maximum reasoning to every request is like calling a strategy workshop to choose lunch: thorough, expensive, and slightly hungry.

Create simple tiers. Use fast, lower-cost settings for drafts, classification, and routine support; deeper reasoning for complex analysis; and specialist review for high-risk decisions. Track accuracy, rework, latency, and cost by use case. Unlimited user access should expand learning, while approved workflows and data rules prevent convenience from becoming invisible operational risk.
